Passport to Adventure

Well, my current passport expires in October so I have been scrambling to get it renewed. I have an Amazon trip coming up in January and I do not want delays to cost me stress and extra money. The problem is that with my schedule lately it has not been easy to make the time. But some things are necessary and it would have been a greater ordeal if I had let it expire so I forced myself to take care of it this week. As simple as the process seems, it takes a lot of consideration actually. So, I thought I would share some tips for those of you who are either getting your first passport or who are up for a renewal.
- If you are a AAA Gold member you can get a set of free passport photos taken just by going to your local AAA office.
- If you are not with AAA – Kinko’s will do the deed for little money.
- Take cash or a check to the Post Office. You have to send a check or money order with your application and if you plan on sending a money order the Post Office will not let you put that on a credit card – they are cash only for that service.
- If you are renewing then do not forget to take your current passport. You have to send that in.
- Because you are sending your passport I recommend sending your application Priority Mail and with a Signature Confirmation slip.
- You will have the option for a Passport Booklet or a Passport Card. Do your homework before choosing. The card has limited use and will not work for you if you are traveling to most places.
- Make sure you have plenty of time. An expedited passport will cost you an extra $60. Ouch!
- If you have any questions check out www.travel.state.gov for the latest details, prices and processing times. You can also download an application there.
- While you are renewing things, open up your wallet and make sure your Medjet membership is current and will be through your trip. If you are afraid you will forget you can always call and take care of your renewal now so that you will automatically renew when the time comes.
